Aint no love in the Heart of the City....

Well i have always been interested in the poverty that has always been active in my city and has lead me to search out a book addressing the issue. I for one never lived remotely near the heart of it all (Cabrini Green and Robert Taylor Homes to name a few) but growing up i always saw these massive structures heading towards the city on the Dan Ryan Expressway. After returning from Brazil and actually living among people much more poor than the ones who lived in these buildings, i found much interest to see what caused the fall of these buildings. I have heard people on the right say that its the peoples fault. That they are lazy and only want to live off the "link card" and they need to get jobs. Then people on the left say that its due to old Jim Crow racism and the system was built for them to fail. Yeah i have done my share of readings online and stuff but personally, after seeing what being poor REALLY is, i think both sides fail to address what human misery really is and what affect it can have on a person. Yes, the poverty between both countries is very different but the weight of poverty is the same. At least i think so. American Project: Rise and Fall of the Ghetto is a book written by Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh who studied at the University of Chicago and wrote this book while interviewing residents and the Robert Taylor Homes on the south side of Chicago. In my search i found this book here at the University of Utah and i am going to read this to see if i can get any insights into a world i only knew through the windows of my car or the news. Im pretty excited about this to be honest. Ill try to post up my thoughts as my reading continues!

Chi town i love you

I met her one day in my car while i was looking out the window. Back then i couldnt understand why i would go up to see her. Sometimes i remember looking at her face at night and wouldnt say a word but just look at her beauty and excitement she always gave me. On my way up to see her i would always be reminded of how i can be a champion and then look across the way and she would remind me about reality being that if you dont work for you goals, someday you may lose everything. I would wonder why she would bring me bad news. she wanted to tell me about how kids were dying and worst of all, she would suddenly out of nowhere get cold on me and not care if i liked it or not. She has taught me about who i am and what i want to be, she gave me my identity even though i didnt know it at the time. One day i decided it was time to leave her. I got in my car and headed west to the mountains. It was then i realized how much i loved her and how much i miss her. Every now and then i go back to see her and she always seems to change but only becomes more beautiful. It seems like she has more life to her at night and during the day i can see her from my house. I never wanted to leave her but sometimes in order to understand how much something or someone means to you, you must give it time and space. Now that i know i love her, I cant wait to see the day where she can give me a place to once again call home and never leave her again. Her bitter cold gives me the best memories..........

fall break!!!

Ahhhhh fall break! So the U of U decided a while back to give the student body a week off during fall. i think its a great idea but i do not like that all the professors feel like its their duty to remind us about how miserable we will be when we come back to school with the amount of school work they all give us. when i get back i will have a TON of things to do and i will hate life. anywho i had a lot of friends saying they were going to go somewhere for break and enjoy the week. My boss, upon finding out about my break, decides to give me a 40 hour work week! which by all means is fine because im still broke anyway. like i was saying, my friends are going away and taking vacations. me on the other hand decided to take a vacation of my own! thats right, Provo UTAH!!!! what a vacation right??? yeah im thinking the same thing but at least i can say i went somewhere and didnt stay at my house in salt lake doing nothing on my days off. so this should be an interesting week living in one of the most boring places on earth. the state of utah in general is the most boring state in the country so why not enjoy the worst of the worst right?!?!?!

past couple of weeks.....

A lot has happened with me these couple of weeks that have involved my girlfriend. i dont want to involve what actually happened or even talk about it on here since its something we both need to work on. i was a pretty happy guy being with her and getting all happy and "gitty" when she would tell me she is coming up to salt lake city. to be honest its something i just dont want to lose over something so silly, and yet serious that went down. so now im just talking with her and trying to figure out what her and me need to do. i want to get back together. its something many friends have told me not to do but honestly i know myself better than anyone else and if im getting myself in to deep doo doo then so be it. its just hard right now now being able to hear what she wants and its causing me to get stressed. Ah stress...... the word i despise so much because i deal so terrible under it. which leads me to another question, should i try to be with someone who stresses me out even before anything happens??? or is this one of those things that just has to be so that it can be sweeter in the end??? well i will say this, if it does happen it better be sweet. losing sleep and waking up in the middle of the night breaking cold sweats is not something i enjoy nor would i think anyone else would. i have been listening a lot to kanye west's new single called "love lock down" which has a verse that really describes how i feel right now:

new job!!

ive decided that working nine bucks an hour and not really doing anything at newlook international is not enough for me. dont get me wrong, i think newlook is an awesome company with much potential to achieve its vision and become a leader and inovator in concrete color stains but for right now i dont think nine an hour will cut it. with an idea like theres, they are bound to take off any minute but that minute is taking too long for my blood :) check them out at www.getnewlook.com. so now i got a job at columbia sportswear at their outlet store in park citt, utah. its about a 20 minute drive from here but hey, its ten an hour!!!!!! i could totaly work off that and plus i can use trax for free to get me to school! the past two days we have had trainings and such and honestly im very exicited to work there!!! they seem laid back and want to have fun while working. something that apparently i couldnt have before because i wasnt very "professional." see heres the thing about me, i love to talk to people, i love to laugh, and i love to see people around me be happy!!! i seriously cannot take just sitting in a chair staring at a computer and not being able to crack jokes or laugh while i work. ITS BORING!!!!!!! so here after meeting the new co workers, its looking like its going to be a BLAST. our manager is young and was already talking about playing up to date music and not redundant stuff that will bore us. who knows, maybe it might turn out to suck but for now things are looking better and hopefully this will be a job that i will look forward to clocking in and not one that i will resent.......

First Speeding Ticket EVER!!!!

Yesterday at about 7:30 AM Mountain Standard time i was pulled over on I-15 around the Pocatello area going 80 on a 65. Let me tell you, i really hate speed traps! It switched to 65 and sure enough the cop was right there waiting for its prey, which was me! at first i was very upset because i know that out of state plates get higher fines so i now would be broke, even more so..He pulls me over and asks me if i knew why i was getting pulled over and i told him whats up and he gave me a 75 dollar ticket! WHEW!!!!!!!! so now i have to mail in this stupid slip with money that i was saving up to get a new ipod. It seems like every time i try to save money something always comes up that i have to spend it on. God bless the Idaho State police! Go eat some potatoes you pricks!!!!!!!

look a blog!!!

So after much deliberation I have created my own blog! i probably shouldnt be doing this now since im at work but meh, everyone needs a little break right? I have started yet another semester at the University of Utah majoring in Business Administration. My life right now is pretty good. I have a job(which i may be quiting soon shhhhhh! but have another job possibly lined up) a girldfriend who i enjoy spending time with, a cool roommate, cheap rent, and a car that give me 38 mpg! Did i mention my White Sox are in first place??? Yeah, my life is good, reaalll good!!!! I can only think of one thing that can make my happiness complete and that is living back home in Chicago near my family and in the city that i love so so much! There ya have it. Hopefully i can keep up with this so yall can read more about my interesting life and adventures i have with my friends and family!
